Design and Planning
The Client approached me to design a “traditional” style replacement of his time worn 1960’s house situated in a picturesque village located in the leafy Cambridgeshire countryside. I visited site and undertook a physical survey to create a picture of the existing building for planning.
Meeting with the Client on site also allowed me to gain a full understanding of the context, the plot was situated between two existing houses, and of the Client’s needs from which my design proposals were created.
The design brief evolved through conversations with the Client creating a clear picture of their hopes and desires. Armed with the brief, and having met the Client, I began the design process creating essential and functional and beautiful spaces within a 3-dimensional vaulted envelope.
The central entrance hall is the main showpiece space and the first space the visitor experiences. Fully 1½ storeys, the hall takes on a number of functions being the main reception space, dining room and link between the two accommodation wings of the dwelling.
The rear façade marries large areas of glass with green oak to open up the living space with the imaginatively landscaped garden, whilst the approach elevation offers a more private but welcoming façade to the roadside.
Engaging with the planning officer from the outset resulted in a smooth application process and the permitted design was little changed from the application design thanks to a good rapport with the planning officer dealing with the case.
Following planning I prepared a comprehensive building regulations pack including fully dimensioned plans, sections, elevations and specification notes assisting both the building regulations submission and the on-site construction process.
Being in a position to both design the house and prepare the more technical building regulations drawings the Client benefitted from a high degree of continuity which proved advantageous and helped ensure a positive experience for the Client throughout the construction process.
The result is a truly beautiful and imaginative home much to the Client’s delight.
